Reading the symptoms
Dashboard lights that dim dramatically when you turn the key, or a rapid machine-gun clicking, mean a battery with nothing left. Complete silence can be a dead battery, a loose terminal, or a bad connection. A strong, healthy crank that never catches is a different family of problem, and no amount of jumping fixes it.
