Can I cancel a request?
Yes, and there is one courtesy attached to it.
Short answer
Yes. You can close a request you no longer need, and an unaccepted one closes on its own within two hours anyway. If a helper has already accepted, say so in the private chat before you disappear — someone may already be crossing town for you. Once the request ends, exact location sharing ends with it.

The problem solved itself
It happens constantly — a coworker had cables, the door was unlocked, the ride showed up. Close it. There is no penalty, and a stale live request is worse for everyone than a cancelled one.
If someone is already on the way
Two sentences in chat is the whole obligation: it is handled, thank you, sorry for the drive. Vanishing on a person who left their apartment for you is the one thing that makes people stop showing up for strangers.

Does cancelling hurt my account?
Cancelling because a problem resolved is normal. Repeatedly pulling people out for nothing is a different thing and can be reported.
Can a helper cancel?
Yes. Plans change and roads close. Saying so in chat is the same courtesy in the other direction.

How long does a request stay open?
Up to two hours. If nobody accepts within that window the request closes on its own, and you can post a new one. Only one live request at a time.
