Moving out without losing your deposit

North Dakota and Minnesota tenant rules differ, so use the rules for the state you actually rent in — Fargo and West Fargo are ND, Moorhead and Dilworth are MN.

The two-states problem

Step by step
1. Give written notice
Follow the notice period in your lease and send it in a form you can prove you sent.
2. Photograph everything
Before cleaning and after, with timestamps. This is the entire deposit argument if there is one.
3. Book the logistics early
Truck, elevator reservation, and loading zone. In May these run out before the boxes do.
4. Donate what is usable
Working furniture, kitchenware, and clothing have destinations here. Check what an organization accepts before loading.
5. Confirm keys and forwarding address
Get the key return and deposit-return process in writing, with an address to send it to.
